“Why can’t you just be normal?”

You have to be at least 18 to sell clothing at our store, so we get a ton of junior high and high school girls coming in with their parents to sell. We had quite a line when this very excited girl of around 15 came in the side door with her mother. I explained how we worked as the girl signed her name on the list. I watched as the girl chatted excitedly to her mother about “how cool” our store was. Her friends from school shopped here. She was so cute. It was finally her turn and she brought up her Holister bag stuffed with size ones and extra smalls.

Me: “Hi Ladies! How are you today?”

Daughter: “We’re good!”

Me: “Good! Is this your first time?”

Daughter: “Yes! My friends from school shop and sell here but it’s my first time!”

Me: “Funsies!” (Don’t know where that came from) “So I’m just going to need a valid photo ID from you Mom and we can get started”

Mom: “What is the purpose of the ID?”

Me: “We keep track of what you sell and the money or credit you receive and when we enter your info the transaction between us becomes legal.”

Mom: “What information off my license do you need?”

Me: “We take it all actually. We don’t use it for any other purpose but to document that this is a legal transaction. And I promise promise never to stalk you.”

Daughter laughs nervously. Mother doesn’t even crack a smile.

Daughter: “Just give her your ID mom”

Mom: “Well…I’m not sure I want to do this”

Me: “If you’re unsure or worried about your address, I can put our store address as your address and just input your name and DL number”

Daughter: “Yeah mom! Can we just do that PLEASE?!” she looks horrified

Mom: “No. I don’t want to do this.”

The daughter looks like she is about to cry and die of embarrassment.

Me: “Are you sure? I promise your information is secure with us.”

Mom:  “No. I don’t want to do this”

The daughter tears up. And I feel so bad for her. They waited to patiently, and now she won’t be in the cool club when she goes back to school…Ugh! Why couldn’t she just be a normal Mom?! Gawd!!!
